2001 - Garden Party
Home Introduction Events How to Join Contacts & Links

By kind permission of Mr and Mrs Bretten, a Garden Party was held at Stonehill House on Monday 9th July 2001. The house is Elizabethan, and made the perfect backdrop for a wonderful evening's entertainment. Even the weather was kind, with the South Downs holding on to the showers. Members and their friends brought food to compliment the barbecue (ably manned by Steve, Mike and Peter), for which some fine lamb steaks were provided by Lyn (she has more for sale...).

Musical entertainment included:

  • Solos from Dawn and John, with Dawn being assisted by Gill's black labrador (see photos...)
  • A duet (from Porgy & Bess) by Dawn and John, and a duet ("Watchman, What of the Night") between John and Brian, the latter appearing to be completely unruffled by the fact that he'd never seen or heard the music before...
  • A small group from within the choir giving renditions of "Weep, O Mine Eyes", "Juanita", and "Lovely Joan" (by kind permission of Geoff Allan).
  • The main body of the choir singing (as Brian put it) some "Work In Progress" pieces: Fair Phyllis I Saw (Farmer); Drinkin' of the Wine (Whalum); At the Mid Hour of Night and The Last Rose of Summer (Thomas Moore/Sir John Stevenson - poems to traditional melodies).

all expertly accompanied by the inestimable Gavin Stevens.
