A programme of popular choral and orchestral items, including Handel’s splendid coronation anthem, Zadok The Priest, and Vaughan Williams’ Serenade To Music. This was composed for the Jubilee of Sir Henry Wood and first performed by a very distinguised round-up of soloists in 1938. Orchestral pieces included in this concert are Grieg’s Holberg Suite and also Albinoni’s Adagio with Gavin Stevens, the choir’s accompanist, playing the organ. Central to the concert is a performance of Joseph Haydn’s Missa Brevis Sancto Joannis de Deo, known more colloquially as the “Little Organ Mass”. Actually, the performance of the Mass will not be quite so little as Joseph Haydn intended. In its original form, the second movement (the Gloria) was only 31 bars long: that’s about a minute! Shortly after its completion in 1775, to suit the requirements of Salzburg Cathedral, Joseph’s younger brother Michael extended this movement to the full length, and this is the version chosen for this concert.
